Cold hands, smoky breath
Brown trout jumping Nine Mile Creek
in the April dawn
Nine Mile Creek runs right through Camillus, where I grew up. It meanders around through Marcellus and Camillus—great place to fish.
My father was very big on trout fishing. It was something he picked up in retirement. He was the kind of person who would throw himself into whatever interest he had, and become very enthusiastic about it. His passion was catching and got me into it.
Opening day is April 1st. So it's likely to still be cold, especially in the early morning, and there's that excitement of getting out there and seeing the fish jump. Wow, it's officially spring and life is happening!
My style is kind of children's bookish, a bit cartoony. While most of my work is rather detailed, I was able to be more graphic with this piece.
Sometimes when I paint, I don't really plan, but just allow the piece to come together. Here I wanted to illustrate the movement of the water and the liveliness of the fish.
I've only been fishing about two times in my life, so it was interesting to research and find reference photos for the trout. Before illustrating this piece, I never knew that brown trout are not, in fact, brown.
I personally like this piece a lot. I've gotten good reactions to it. I think it illustrates the poem well—and in a unique style.
