Blazing Dinosaur
Serves up red hot barbeque
With rhythm and blues.
I have enjoyed writing haiku over a period of several years. I became interested in it when my daughter studied haiku in grade school; I was inspired by one of her teachers, also a haiku writer.
I chose to write about the Dinosaur Bar-B-Q because it is a really popular place in Syracuse -- a landmark, almost -- and because it has a lot of color associated with it, the flames and the blues and all, and they have really good food. I think their ribs are the best I've ever had.
What I like about haiku is the short format, which makes it easy, but challenging at the same time. I like the challenge of trying to express a beautiful thought or depicting a beautiful image, usually about nature, in a very short space.
I really like the Dinosaur Barbeque -- for the food, the music, and the wild dinosaur art on the walls.
I love drawing cartoon characters -- especially ones of dinosaurs -- so I thought that this project would be perfect to do. The first design I made was a dinosaur character with shades and a spatula, taking up most of the frame. But then I began looking at the design of art nouveau posters. I thought I should make the dinosaur more of a logo, and focus on the design of the piece.
It went from being a "character" project to more of a poster design, although I made sure to include characters like the band members, since music is a huge part of the place's atmosphere, as well as the waitresses.
Overall, it was a fun project for me, and I was able to incorporate my quirky sense of humor, as well as my dinosaur character into it.
