Cardinal, Feathered

poster information

Description

Cardinal, feathered
masked bandit on a snowy
limb — all can see you!

This haiku was inspired by my love of Cardinals and the way they look on snowy boughs. The bird is so obvious, but the idea that he's wearing a mask seems ironic, and I liked that. I've submitted haiku before, most of them historic. I don't think they had as much visual impact as this one.

I'm glad that I could be a part of this project, as I love working with students, and they are getting to know some people in Syracuse off the SU hill. I'm looking forward to the unveiling, as it's nice to see your work in print, but to see it as part of a poster, with art, is even more exciting. The posters together tell us something about our community.

I chose to illustrate this haiku because a Cardinal in the snow is a really iconic image of winter for me. I liked playing with one dominant color and having everything else be more subtle. I was thinking a lot more about the surrounding design of the poster, rather than just the image, which was a process I don't normally take.

I was challenged by the assignment because this was one of the first times where I was proposed with the idea that my work was going to be viewed by a large audience, not just by my classmates. Learning that my design was chosen was a surreal moment.
