Sulfur scent, dragons
linger, glow like jellyfish,
spit smoke, float; fireworks.
I go to the fireworks every summer with a good friend of mine; it's our thing. Last year, Brewerton. The summer before, we sat on the bridge in Baldwinsville.
I wrote a young adult fantasy novel a few years ago, being re-released as “Totems” this spring. The protagonist is a dragon. Dragons are just very dear to my heart. Not as scary monsters but dragons as something special and something good.
I just want to believe in magic.
I remember looking up at the fireworks last summer. And I was thinking of my character Gabrielle; the fireworks were coming from her. Then one exploded in the form of a jellyfish.
The first thing I really liked about this poem was the mention of dragons. I've always loved dragons; they're so fun to draw because you can really play around with their shapes. Ever since I was a kid, the majority of my sketchbooks have consisted of dragons and other fantasy creatures.
I've always liked fireworks, too, and when I would go to the fair with my parents, I would always look forward to the fireworks show. My dad would also buy fireworks and set them off in our back yard when we had parties. I really wanted this piece to capture that same energy and playfulness of those childhood memories.
